The Barley Grain

By Peter Terry
Catalog Number CB#276

The Barley Grain is a double-jig in F major and a nameless jig in d minor of a more emphatic nature. This is a good feature for your flutes and woodwinds. This piece was commissioned by Mary Land, Director of Bands, Young Harris College, Georgia . The work was premiered by the Interlochen Intermediate Wind Symphony in Summer, 2010 with Mary Land conducting.

These melodies are set in a traditional style with percussion, and are imagined as being performed at an outdoor harvest festival as an entertainment with dancing. They are lively and infectious melodies that transmit much of the characteristic joy found in traditional Irish music.

This recording was done by The Butler University Wind Ensemble, Dr. Robert Grechesky, Director. The band performs the finest in wind music from the Renaissance to the present in a concert series presented in magnificent Clowes Memorial Hall on the Butler Campus, as well as other venues throughout Indianapolis and central Indiana.
