From the pen of Donald Coakley comes this new composition for violin and viola soloist with string orchestra. Fantasia On An Old American Hymn Tune is based on the hymn Wondrous Love. Appearing first under the title Christopher in 1848, in W. Hauser's hymn collection Hesperian Harp, Wondrous Love, like the hymn tune Jerusalem, is an excellent example of the rich heritage of early American hymnody. Many of these early hymns have their roots in the folk traditions of the nation's early years. In some cases, these wonderful melodies had their genesis in the southern legacy of shape note singing.
Written for solo violin, solo viola and string orchestra, this composition offers an opportunity to feature your top violin and viola or to bring in two soloist.
